wesley james pryor was born in jacksonville, pennslyvania to vanessa and jonathan pryor. they were a young couple fresh out of high school when vanessa found out she was unexpectedly pregnant. needless to say, the road for the two of them was rocky. they had met each other in high school. vanessa was intelligent and an honors student, full of dreams and life. but jonathan was quite the opposite. vanessa was drawn to his adventurous personality and spontaneity. but he was trouble from the beginning. jon was a heavy drinker even in his high school days, suspended twice and expelled once for bringing alcohol to school. it hardly came a surprise when the small town found out vanessa was pregnant, though they expected more from her. despite the harsh scrutiny, she willingly sacrificed her future college education to take care of her child while jon got a job working at the local steel mill. before wesley was born, they decided it was best to tie the knot, and find a way to settle down as a family.
times were tough for the two of them. and when jon realized he wasn’t earning enough money to support his small family, his addiction began to quickly eat away at him. he had an unsalvageable reputation as the town drunk - unable to keep a stable job and steady income. it threw the young family into spiraling debt, fast. any future for the married couple seemed bleak, especially to jon. depression set in for wesley's father, and instead of coming home after work, he made a habit of staying out late. sometimes there were days he didn’t even come home. rumors of countless affairs started spreading quickly throughout the town, but vanessa decided to turn a blind eye to it all. the older wesley got, the more the family struggled. vanessa worked part-time as a waitress after wes began school. it wasn’t until wes started public school, when he realized just how poor his family was compared to his more affluent peers. he was teased mercilessly as a result; and friends for wesley were hard to come by. as years passed he became vastly curious about the mechanics of technology. wes spent his time invested in computers and electronics, figuring out how and what made them work. it was his outlet; and at the young age of 12, he built his first computer out of old scraps from vanessa’s hand-me-down pc. wesley was a gifted student and he excelled in school; but his above average intelligence and straight a’s gave students even more of an incentive to make him feel as though he didn’t belong. like his father, wes started a lot of fights in school. one way or another, he was always in trouble. he was sent out of class, suspended for fighting, and grounded more than he wasn’t. but in his defense, he was protecting himself from constantly getting picked on. it wasn’t until high school when wes outgrew his classmates, when the fights lessened to a dead halt. eventually, wesley’s father stopped coming home altogether. days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. his absence forced wes into adulthood at an early age, sacrificing his childhood for the sake of his crippling family. four months went by before they would ever see jon again. wes still remembers it as though it were yesterday. three days before his 15th birthday, wes came home from school to find his dad’s old chevy parked outside the house. it struck wes as strange, since he hadn’t seen his dad’s truck in months - let alone his dad. as he walked through the silent house, calling out for jon, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of frantic worry. not for himself nor his father, but for his mother. because deep down, welsey knew what was behind the closed door of his father’s study. when he knocked and heard nothing, he opened the door to find his dad face down, in a pool of his own blood. shock and anger ran through wesley like a bolt of lightening. he hated his dad for his cowardice, and leaving the family behind more penniless than ever before. while his reputation wrecked the family, his suicide destroyed them. it didn’t take long before the town casted vanessa and wesley as the black sheep, and offered no sympathy of any kind. vanessa quickly spiraled into a deep depression shortly after joe’s death. she worked three jobs to make ends meet, while wesley started work at his high school fixing computer bugs and viruses. it wasn’t much money, but the two of them did what they could to survive. by the time he was a senior in high school, wesley applied to every college on the east coast. when he was accepted to columbia university on a full ride, he sought it as an opportunity to start over. he begged his mom to go with him, but she couldn’t afford to live in new york, so she stayed behind. he promised after college he would take care of her, and until then wire her money each week. while wes was reluctant to leave, his mother pushed him to make a life for himself and showered him with praise. it wasn’t until wes moved to manhattan and attended the university, when he started making friends. he even had a few girlfriends and flings while in college, but nothing too serious. he earned summa cum laude and majored in computer science at twenty-four. since then, wesley has remained living in upper manhattan, working as a cyber security analyst (ethical hacker) for the nys division of homeland security. he generally works at home to secure and analyze cyber threats against the nation’s networks. but his profession only enables wesley’s reclusion. he’s managed to save enough money to live comfortably in the city, but he’s still struggling to get his mom to move out. |
